With the output from this catalyst, service providers and vendors will have a better idea of what it takes to make BPM succeed “in the real world” where there is a mix of non-standards based systems that are supporting a large number of customers that cannot have their services interrupted. Almost every service provider in the world is faced with this issue which impedes them from using the readily available, cutting edge BPM capabilities. With NextGen services starting to yield a noticeable percentage of revenue, scaling the operational infrastructure to scale those services is becoming more critical.
Additionally, the requirements process for BPM is particularly challenging since it is dependent on currently installed systems, paper based (if you are lucky) process documentation, and impact and are impacted by changes in upstream and downstream systems. Therefore, a new way of collecting and implementing requirements is required. The key to this will be a disciplined BPM methodology supported by a flexible BPM platform that can accommodate a variety of process types, integration requirements, and data structures. The most likely development lifecycle is iterative and also perhaps reactive and needs to involve the various stakeholders in the process of BPM to keep the people who know the process as close to the development and deployment as possible.
There is significant interest in BPM within telecommunications as well as other industries – in fact it is the fastest growing enterprise software segment right now – and is inherent to other popular catalysts. This catalyst will generate best practices and identify the interconnection with these other catalysts plus TMF standards as they relate to BPM.
This catalyst will build on the prior BPM catalysts from 2002 – 2006 which focused on the support and deployment of specific services leveraging BPM approaches. Instead of product-focused, this catalyst will take an “issues-based” approach and therefore expand the knowledge base across legacy and NextGen services.
